Friday, 4:30 a.m. wake up,* walk to the bus to take to the train station to go to Toronto, sleep a couple hours, listen to some Rheostatics, arrive at Union, phone home, wait for Kari to arrive, walk to hotel, run into Mélanie and posse, check in early, take a picture of Sam the Record Man from balcony, walk in the direction of the CBC, take picture of Kari being city hall, buy a veggie dog, buy everything the CBC store sells (almost), gaze longingly at Tickle Trunk in CBC museum, get Friendly Giant song stuck in head, walk to Hockey Hall of Fame, take pictures of good things (Verbeek's jersey; me, Kipper and Vezina; Lanny, Joe and Peter; Stanley), play a terrible game of table hockey (since when is the goalie controlled by a knob?), pick up something Koivuian for Nicole, walk back to hotel, spy Evan Solomon interviewing the Rheostatics outside Massey, think slightly less ill of Evan Solomon for a moment, take the picture numbered "1" above (I think it's quite good), approach very hesitantly, procure autographs, marvel at the kid who sings Queen at some Rheostatics because he is a serious weirdo, clean up and sit down at hotel, admire autographs, grab food at some subterranean salad bar, see a dude who looks like that friend of Burkholder's, walk over to Massey, take seats, go for merch, say hi to Gleason (Gleason does not know who is saying hi to him), wonder if I'm sitting next to Robson, be there for the last Rheostatics concert ever Setlist, according to Kari's notes Saskatchewan Me and Stupid Bad Time to Be Poor P.I.N. Mumbletypeg It—honestly can't remember and can't tell if that's what Kari wrote or if it's just a scribble Christopher King of the Past KERR AND CLARKE! CD wallet, sit in tiny studio for 1.5 episodes of GO!, take subway to Downsview, take $50 taxi ride to McMichael, go on Group of Seven tour and then Takao Tanabe tour, revisit Group of Seven works, refill eyes very well, try to follow one of the trails (and succeed!), buy AJ a Tanabe poster, take another $50 taxi ride back to Yorkdale (no shoes), take subway to Eaton Centre (still no shoes), walk back to hotel, find that the 12th floor has flooded, get moved to a fancier but less useful room on the 26th (of 27), hang things to dry, take picture of CN Tower from balcony, decide it definitely was not Robson, wonder how I ever thought it was, walk to Fran's for dinner, breathe in the Sam the Record Man air, buy some stuff (but not much at all), walk back to hotel, turn on hockey game 2 minutes late, feel good about Iggy getting in a fight so early on, drift in and out of sleep for second and third, win 3–2, sleep Sunday, 8:00 a.m. enjoy 26th floor's fancy CD alarm clock, pack up, walk to Eggspectation, eat some eggs (with a side of spectation), take subway to Union, store bag, walk to Queen St., observe things before they open, check out Emily Carr exhibition at AGO, confirm that this is the same one I saw at the National Gallery a bunch of times (only with a few fewer pieces), buy another poster for AJ, walk around some more, pay respects to the Horseshoe, wander around Kensington Market a bit, get Kari to a subway to take to a bus to take to the airport, go back to Ben and Jerry's for a chocolate peanut butter milkshake (they're easier to eat in the rain than a bowl or cone), take a lap of SkyDome, reaffirm refusal to call it Rogers Centre (even though it has a Rogers Video in it now, for real), phone Jeffery, phone home, buy a pumpernickel bagel and some rice crackers, pick up bag, sit down in line, board train late, sleep some, listen to some Rheostatics, take a bus back downtown, walk the rest of the way home, type this *raise the curtains From your deep provincial eyes. Speak out, for I am certain This song is over.
